Do You Know Where You're Going To

amin2 0a6af

The lyrics of Diana Ross’s song, Theme from Mahogany resonated way back in 1976 when I was still schooling in Form Four or so they called it the ‘honeymoon year’ before going to Form Five.

Back then, we only have a Guidance Counsellor in school and you have to make an appointment to see them to discuss about your future inclination or aptness for a certain vocation.

Bear in mind, we don’t have the luxury of internet and access to the plethora of information like what we have now in this 21st century. At times your predilection may differ from time to time as they were no proper guidance from your elders and you just follow your peers, ‘Monkey see, monkey do’. As young boys and girls we tend to be capricious with our decisions and this is the time when we really need the buttresses of our mothers and fathers.

Students’ visceral fear of change is inevitable as the young minds are not cogent to absorb the understanding of what lies ahead or the ‘road less travelled’.

The classic example is when you have decided to choose your career then comes your parents and they will always oppugn to your decision as it does not dovetail to what they want. It could be a boon to you as they know better as they have gone through this life. Question time, what do you want to excel after you have finished your Form Five? The song jives with ‘do you know where you’re going to’ and this is the conundrum. It’s about time you wake up and be intrepid to face the reality of life as it is not all bed of roses to figure out what is the best thing to do as ‘a ship buffeting against the wind’. ‘It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time of learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them’.

Suggestions to the newbies:

  1. Flip the newspaper everyday and stalk the columns on Education Fair or any other opportunities to study either locally or abroad.
  2. Consult your peers and brainstorm the current requirement of the industry so that what you want to pursue will be relevant and co-existing.
  3. Attend any career talk organised by companies, universities, colleges or any education authorities to find out and fathom the needs for the market.
  4. Surf the internet and do some research for the courses that you are keen and interested according to what you are hankering for.
  5. It would be even better if you could take a drive and visit the colleges and universities in your vicinity area and meet up with their Marketing department and seek help from them.

Do not be disconsolate with what you probably don’t get as it is just a matter of time when you can put your mind at ease to pursue a career in life.

Keep this juggernaut to determine your future as you will be the one to decide the ascend and descend of your life and au fait with the current demands and disciplines of what you really wanted and it is only for you to decide and take responsibility in your life.

Never allow anyone to vilipend your capability in choosing the right career as there is no such thing as the right career but the career that you have always wanted and you know best.

Do not allow anyone jibe and bash your dreams into smithereens and take full charge of your life and as the British says, ‘Bob’s your uncle’ and bee’s knees to what you have started or wanting to start. Never ever get into an adversarial relationship with your loved ones as they are there to make sure that you are doing the right thing to choose your field of studies and to be successful in life.

‘The universe doesn’t give you what you ask for with your thoughts; it gives you what you demand with your actions’. Take immediate action and do it now!

‘Sometimes it’s not the pain that makes you suffer, it’s you own NEGATIVE THOUGHTS that make things worse’.

Carry with you the positive vibes and disseminate to everyone that you care, give more and receive less and let God do the rest.
