Within The Perimeters - Coruscate The Spirit Of Ramadhan

ramadhan2 160c9

Is fasting all about our habitual gluttony to fill our palate or abstinence to heed the third tenet of ‘Rukun Islam’ or the usual abligurition and enjoying our voluptuous and satisfying food in the bistro’ convivial atmosphere? There is no point in fasting if we were to submit ourselves to hunger and thirst but we do not observe and behave righteously to submit to the omnipotent and thus, we miss the whole point of the fasting month.

In the Holy Quran 2:183, “O you who believe! Observing As Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqin (the pious)”.

It is mandatory as per the high order of Allah for all Muslims around the world to submit themselves to fasting in the month of Ramadhan ,the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar as well as the very fact that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received the first revelation of the Holy Quran in the month of Ramdhan in the year 610. The training of fasting has actually started in the month of Rejab followed by Sya’ban as the testing ground for Muslims to practise before embarking into the month of Ramadhan although in those months, it is not mandatory. There are also some who fast observing the ‘sunat’ Monday and Thursday throughout the year as personal ritual.

So, what is so different as to compare with Ramadhan and the other months? As I have been trained by my mum and dad to fast as early as 6 year old, it is the month of reflection of what you have done wrong and to expiate, filling in ones’ shoes of how the vagrants, dosser and the poor who have no food to eat or those with paltry income that can only feed their children ‘hand to mouth’ on a daily basis.

We have been so busy chasing the worldly desires, at times forgetting to even greet one another along the vestibule, calling our mums and dads even siblings merely preoccupied, focusing incessantly on accumulating wealth of which we know that we can’t take it with us when it’s time to meet our Creator.

The cornucopia of a blessed life that we have taken for granted is then reflected in this holy month of Ramadhan so that we could learn to empathise the deprivation of the less fortunate and the hunger as a reminder of our calling to alleviate the suffering. We have been blessed with peace and tranquility in this beautiful country we call home, as to compare with other countries especially in the month of Ramadhan without being downtrodden or carnage as the debacle happening in Gaza, with bombs and explosions toward annihilation.

The question is, do we really appreciate the ambience especially while carrying out our duties in the holy month? Cleansing the mind and detoxifying the bowel as well as the soul, of which many find difficult to do due to our own doings and most of the time it becomes habitual.

How can one imbibe the true spirit of Ramadhan? We were taught that while observing the fasting month, one should abstain from all sinful acts such as, diatribe, philippic, slander, wild or tame gossips, malicious remarks as well as all your senses should also fast together with your mind and body synchronised. “When you fast, all your senses, eyes, ears, tongue, hands and feet fast with you”, in a Hadith, narrated by Imam Jafar As –Sadiq.

Above all, patience (I know this is not easy) must be cultivated throughout of course not only in the holy month but at all times. I would like to encourage all my readers and followers to observe and truly comprehend the meaning of Ramdhan and take every opportunity while we have the chance to observe it for we know that some of our dearly beloved are not here today especially my darling dad, Mohd Hussain Sukor who passed on 19th Syawal, 1434/26th August 2013. Al-Fatiha to you dad.

Here’s wishing you a happy and refulgent Eid Mubarak 1435 with your loved ones and don’t forget that for what we have repented in the holy month of Ramadhan, bring it along with you so that we can become a better person with good demeanour till the time our Creator calls us home.

My humble request to everyone is to always maintain peace and order and always hungry for knowledge and be a philonoist not a philistine. “Life is like running the marathon; the key to success is not the runner’s speed at the start, but his perseverance during the journey”.
